What I wonder is why 2.17.1 would be causing this problem for you, since we all know Composer hasn't been changed or updated in a decade. Maybe the problem is you're trying to edit a *modern* page the Composer doesn't understand due to its age. Can you give an example of what "junk" you want to edit out of a page?
