If you want to create standards-compliant web pages that validate
perfectly - have fun. I'm not stopping you nor even suggesting that
you shouldn't try to create perfectly compliant web pages. What I
am saying is that at least one other person does not share your
values and couldn't care less if a page validates or no. What I care
about is that the page displays properly for me, on my computer, with
a minimal effort on my part.
Hate to break it to you, but the point of putting a page up on the web
is not so you yourself can admire it, but so someone else can view it,
maybe even enjoy it, learn from it, share it. And that visitor is likely
to have a different computer with different software and a different
configuration. The whole point of HTML in the first place was so a wide
variety of people with different stuff could view the same page and get
pretty much the same look and feel. That's why standards were
established -- so different browsers would know how to interpret the
codes web designers use to mark up their pages.
Now, if your value system is "I don't give a rat's ass if anyone else
can even see my page," then go right ahead and design for yourself.
Write it in Klingon using the Armenian alphabet if you like. You need
not even post it on the web. But if you care even a little about your
visitors, then you might think about making things easier for them.
I'll grant that it's a judgment call how much effort you put into making
it easier and how close to perfection you get. But you should know that
the farther you stray from compliance, the less likely it is that your
visitors will see and understand what you intend. Your call.
