Is there a way, perhaps in auto:config, to set SeaMonkey to direct mailto:

First of all, you want about:config, not auto:config.

Set network.protocol-handler.external.mailto to true.

If you are using Windows, you also need to open the Control Panel
window, launch Internet Options, and select the Programs tab. There,
use the pull-down selection list for E-mail to select your preferred
E-mail application. Then select the OK button. (I know this works for
Windows XP SP3; I don't know about other Windows versions. I certainly
do not know about other operating systems.)

On Mac OS X setting the default browser, is a preference in Apple's own Safari, and setting the default mail client is a pref in Apple Mail.

Tricky to find if no one tells you!

GW
using Mozilla on Mac since b4 there /was/ Safari and Apple Mail
