Geez, does not anyone remember the articles in the computer mags about taking apart a mouse back then and cleaning out the dust and cleaning the ball with a rag and alcohol?

Still, since the advent of optical mice I've had near zero issues with them. Aside from batteries and the crappy new Microsoft mini mice and that the outside finishes just erode away. But, even if the finish wears off they still function fine. Just look ugly.
