/All/ the old roller-ball mice went bad after a while; never knew
one that was still reliable after three years' steady use.

Geez, does not anyone remember the articles in the computer mags about
taking apart a mouse back then and cleaning out the dust and cleaning
the ball with a rag and alcohol?
As I noted in response six hours ago, "periodic crud removal kept them
in good repair." That's what I was referring to (I never had a computer
that outlived its mouse). But I never used a rag, just a Q-tip.
And surely the upside-down version (with the ball on top) was a much
better crud collector.
Still, since the advent of optical mice I've had near zero issues with
them. Aside from batteries and the crappy new Microsoft mini mice and
that the outside finishes just erode away. But, even if the finish
wears off they still function fine. Just look ugly.
Same here. And as long as they last five or ten years, the computer will
be obsolete before the mouse dies.
