Backing up your system and then doing an in-place upgrade will take "a
few hours", same as with Windows or Linux.
Maybe you should let the original poster answer the question - you are
off the mark by a mile or so...
That is, if Linux has evolved
enough to actually do in-place upgrades.
Who brought this into the subject? For me, an in-place upgrade takes me
1/2 hour or so total and has been so for at least 8-10 years,
(Not that I'd do one; I always
do a clean install and then migrate my profile from the existing backup.
That takes even longer.)
