They say? Who's they? OS X is based on BSD. BSD is UNIX, not Linux. Just sayin'.

Something like doing xp to vista update by running an "upgrade" while
being connected to the world wide web. If the net connection is not
reliable then it is likely to fail.

Nowadays, OS X releases are purchased and downloaded from the App Store. Once the download to the local HDD is complete, the update takes place completely offline. The download and the upgrade are two separate events.
