In my list of files where I can place incoming E-mail is an entry 'Archives'. There is no explanation of this in the Help section of SeaMonkey, and I am wondering just what this will do for me and where things will be put.

On SM mail, I don't know. However, using archive on other email
programs will get that email off of the active list and add it
to a compressed file. You can pull the archive data out of archive
as needed. Let's say you have 10,000 emails (like on my work
laptop running Outlook) that you need to save due to government
or company policy, loading 10k emails into your system all the
time would be a drag on resources. Archive keeps them but does
not load them unless extracted from compressed file.
