Having installed the Live HTTP Headers extension, I discovered that two financial institutions where I have accounts were in violation of their own privacy policies. Navigating in their Web sites to perform transactions, the extension showed that cookies and ETags were being set by Facebook when the privacy policies stated that browsing would not involve disclosures to third-parties. This happened because the Web sites were actually fetching images directly from Facebook rather than having local copies of those images. One financial institution quickly changed their Web site to eliminate the fetching of images from Facebook as soon as I notified them of the problem. The other financial institution failed to take corrective actions until I filed a complaint with the relevant U.S. regulatory agency, requesting an enforcement action to make the institution comply with their own published privacy policy. -- David E.
