It does appear that "View Selection Source" is broken in 2.40. "View >
Page Source" still works.
Yeah view page source works, but not its selection source. I checked
in Firefox v45.0.1, and it didn't have this problem. :(

First I've seen of it. It was not an issue with 2.39 so there is no
reason to think it would take 10 years.
