Am I the "problem" or "victim"?

How often do you compact folders? I do it at least once a day, always immediately after daily emptying of trash, sometimes more.

What filesystem is WinXP using? Even with years of saved mail, defragging should make little difference, if any, if it's using NTFS. If it's not using NTFS, some speed increase ought to be evident if you can move your profile to an NTFS filesystem.

How fast is your CPU, and what type? How much RAM? WinXP systems are usually more than a decade old, far less powerful than modern hardware. SM is a far bigger program now than when it was born.

Have you checked to ensure your HD is free of failing sectors? How old is it?

How much speed increase can you notice if you unplug your internet connection and turn off your AV software? Maybe SM isn't your speed problem.

Do you keep a bunch of heavyweight web pages open in tabs working in the background gobbling resources? Maybe you're a candidate for NoScript.
