How often do you compact folders?
Rarely manually. I leave it to SM. I have it set to trigger if X
space will be saved.
I do it at least once a day,
always immediately after daily emptying of trash, sometimes more.
I do not put much in trash. The only things deleted tend to have
been identified as junk/spam.
What filesystem is WinXP using?
NTFS
Even with years of saved mail,
defragging should make little difference, if any, if it's using
NTFS. If it's not using NTFS, some speed increase ought to be
evident if you can move your profile to an NTFS filesystem.
How fast is your CPU,
1.8 GHz
and what type?
Processor x86 Family 6 Model 13 Stepping 8 GenuineIntel ~1861 Mhz
How much RAM?
Total Physical Memory 1,024.00 MB
Available Physical Memory 301.90 MB
Total Virtual Memory 2.00 GB
Available Virtual Memory 1.96 GB
Page File Space 2.40 GB
WinXP systems
are usually more than a decade old, far less powerful than modern
hardware. SM is a far bigger program now than when it was born.
Should not be an issue as I'm comparing this system to how it has
been without any intentional changes.
Have you checked to ensure your HD is free of failing sectors?
How old is it?
Embarrassing questions ;/
I have a diagnostic DVD some where. Will run it and post results.
The hardware is a Lenovo T43 which was purchased "Used".
How much speed increase can you notice if you unplug your
internet connection and turn off your AV software?
Internet is not enabled until after power-up.
Antivirus has not been changed in ???. Please no abuse *LOL*
Maybe SM isn't
your speed problem.
Do you keep a bunch of heavyweight web pages open in tabs working
in the background gobbling resources?
NOPE.
Maybe you're a candidate for NoScript.
*ROFL* JavaScript and cookies effectively banned from any machine
I'll used.
Now to look for my disk diagnostic CD ;/
More later.
Thanks.
