I also had trouble with WU failing on Win7 in December, saying something about the service not running, and eventually stumbled over the answer: change my setting to "Never check for updates," close and relaunch the program, and check manually. Afterward it ran normally and I changed my setting back to the usual "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them."
