It's something called CYA. You can set SeaMonkey to "Automatically save the message every 1 minute".

Where is this pref in the UI?

Edit - Preference - Mails&newsgroup - Composition - Atomatically...

But, I did NOT believe that the message is saved after cancelling a send operation.
