If you set SeaMonkey to download only threads with unread messages,
you would not download thousands of them.

you mean under "synchronization" -> to save disk space don't download
"read messages"?
Well, I thought SM was smart enough not to download again all the
messages I've already on disk as read.
I use View menu > Threads > Threads with Unread.
