That's not really the issue here - for all you know he may have just
finished recovering all of those thousands of files from backup ONTO his
HD - maybe it even took several hours to recover all those files to the HD -
 and the first thing Freenet did is delete them all.

Maybe the mp3s in question were ones he'd painstakingly ripped from his own
CD collection?  (Crazy, I know, but it happens.  Just because he has
thousands of mp3s doesn't mean they're pirated downloads).  If he had the
original CDs he wouldn't bother making a backup I expect, because he could
always rerip them.  But to lose them all, that's a lot of time and effort
wasted and a lot more time and effort to rerip them all again.
