Not directly an answer to the question, but an interesting way of dealing
with backup versions, especially recovering from limited deletion of
important information.
We send out email to about 2500 people about monthly. In one month there
will be about 100 bad email addresses. We send those people a postcard
asking for their new address and then delete their email address so that we
don't send more bad email before they reply with a good address. Recently we
got back a reply that had only the bad address and the new good address - no
name, no nothing we could look up since the bad email address had been
deleted. Since we backup to a CD we just opened the version on a few months
old CD, ignored the numerous messages about all the files being read-only,
and did a find for the bad email address. We now knew the right person to
give the new email address.
