You can enter any value you like into the Payment For field. The 
value list only makes it easy to enter values consistently. Go to 
Find mode and enter the values you are searching for and use the 
ebase Replace script to change them to the values you want.

I don't understand what you mean by Merchandise column.

Probably, but we can't know what to advise unless we know what your 
Merchandise column is and what changes you made to it.

As a guess, the Merchandise column is what is called Purchases in the 
original ebase. Payments will show up in this column when the Payment 
For field has the value Event\Purchase
