Matt,
A further suggested refinement:
Find only the Jim records by using "=Jim" or, even better "==Jim" (without
the quotes). Doing a plain "Jim" find will also find "Jimson" and "Jim Bob",
if you should have these names on your list. Adding the "=" prefix will
force an exact match on that one word, which would exclude a "Jimson",
although not a "Jim Bob". The "==" forces an exact match on the entire
field, which would eliminate the "Jim Bob" as well. Note that the double
equal sign will not work on FMP v4 files when hosted on FMPServer v3.
For a small list, this may be overkill. But in a larger list that isn't
easily skimmed for errors, it's easy to turn a "Jimson" into a "James" or
other similar unintended results. It's worthwhile to occasionally go back to
the FileMaker User Manual and review finding procedures. Knowing how to do
exact finds can save much time and embarrassment when dealing with a large
list.
Holly also mentioned placing the cursor into the field. This must be done to
enable Replace, Cut, Copy, Paste, etc. Otherwise these commands are grayed
out. Unlike Set Field, these commands will only work with the cursor in the
field to be modified, even in a script. New users often find this confusing,
as a previously working command may unexpectedly be grayed out.
FWIW,
Gary Bogue
