With some later messages, I've lost track of where you are, but I'll 
respond to this one. To recover from your backup, you should just 
replace the current (damaged) copy of the ebase file set with one 
from your backup. You do not need to import the data from your backup 
to an empty set.

Eric is right, if your backup comes off a cd, you'll need to change 
the read-only flag on each file to allow you to modify the file.
