While this may seem a pretty good solution, you should be aware that you probably won't be able to reconcile with financial reporting.  GAAP (generally accepted accounting principles) state that for multi-year pledges, you need to "book" the entire amount of the pledge in year 1.  Yes, this drives fundraisers crazy, since it will result in some pretty dramatic peaks and valleys....but, alas, we don't really have a choice.  Which brings me to the original question...if you "book" 3 pledges (one per year), you won't match with the amount your finance person will book on their end.  It would be great if Ebase could incorporate 1x per year payments etc....enbling us to book the entire gift in one year, the way finance people do it, so we can reconcile accounts.  Yes, ebase wasn't intended to be an piece of accounting software, but if there isn't an easy way to generally reconcile the 2 systems, it becomes an arduous and tedious task to determine as to who is right and who has an error.

Or, do we book 3 pledges, in the same year, to get at the solution?

It's more than one calculation. I have looked at that chore and seem
to remember that adding a new pledge period was pretty complicated.
What I have heard of people doing in a case like yours is to enter
three one-time pledges, each due a year apart.
