Holger, "the console output is at serial console and you need a serial nullmodem cable to assign interfaces the first time you boot it up for the embedded image."
The documentation says this, but I think it is false for pfSense 1.0.1. I installed embedded pfSense in a 6 NIC box from http://linitx.com/product_info.php?cPath=4&products_id=909 with a Kingston 512 MByte Compact Flash. I had pfSense console at first time. The only trouble I had was choosing the correct image for my box (pfSense- 1.0.1-512-ad2.img.gz from http://shopping.hacom.net/catalog/pub/pfsense/) and modify the BIOS in order to boot from Compact Flash.
