The documentation says this, but I think it is false for pfSense 1.0.1.
That is correct for all versions, including 1.0.1. I recently used the
embedded image on a similar VIA box to the one you mentioned and that
was the case.
I installed embedded pfSense in a 6 NIC box from
http://linitx.com/product_info.php?cPath=4&products_id=909 with a Kingston
512 MByte Compact Flash.
I have one of those 6 NIC boxes running RC3 still (it "just works",
haven't had a need to mess with upgrading it), but I don't recall
offhand for sure if it behaves the same way or not. It should with the
official release images, but I'm not sure what Bao may have done with
those images, he may have disabled the serial console. I think I may be
running a full install on a microdrive on that box anyway, I don't
recall offhand.
