Chris, you've already got the suggestions on how to fix this, so this
isn't a comment directly to you.

I thought we used GEOM labels for this, or is that only for embedded?
I'm a little confused as to why the real disk/partition would be in
fstab.  I know for a fact I've done installs just like this
(sorta...usb or CF->usb drive mounted in vmware) and never had an
issue booting the resulting image.  OTOH, with vmware, it looks like a
real IDE disk and the disk number is unlikely to change (which brings
me back to GEOM label :-/)
