To share my experience with the list... I decided to go with the super micro bare bones system with the ipmi MB - Atom 510. It is maxed with 4 GB memory and a 32 GB Patriot Torqx TR8 SSD. It's been a few days now - running pf 2.0. I'll take it live and then report my experiences.
So far, this box is not quiet - It is definitely quieter than regular servers and quiter still w/o a spinning drive. But nothing like the Sun Ultra desktops. The cpu is really fast - compared with an Atom 330 with 1 GB ram. I've loaded OpenBSD 4.8 and that runs fast as well. Yes, I'll put it on-line at home and live with the noise. In all, I've spent $354 for the whole thing.
