I'm running this as a part of a CARP+pfsync cluster (not yet functional)
at the colo. I run the previous model (with 2 GBytes and
2x Realtek and a dual-port Intel NIC (WAN and LAN)) at home, in a networking
rack (two redundant fans) in the cellar, along with switch, UPS and a
G4 Mac mini as a home server.

These new Supermicro Atoms boxes are also quite useful
as small servers, as you can mount a 1-2 TByte 3.5" drive inside along
with 2.5" SSD (mounted with hot glue or two-sided sticky tape), or
buy the regular 2x 2.5" mounting bracket. I'm filling a /24
with such an Atom box at about zero load with idling Linux
VServer guests containing nginx+postfix+ssh, each their /home
mounted on the 1 TByte SATA disk, everything else on an SSD.

It is of course not fanless, and I wouldn't want to sit next to it
in the living room. However, it is the quietest rackmount I know by
far.

The only fan there is in the power supply. You can probably operate it
open, and disable the fan so the power supply will cool by convection
with no ill effects.

Another option is a 19" rackmount for noise dampening or a foam
labyrinth box with a large, very slow moving fan.
