I have a "Mid-2010" Mac Mini connected to a Sherwood Newcastle R-972 via HDMI. The "direct" input to the receiver shows up on the Mac Mini as an 8-channel audio output device. I'm not a MaxMSP user but it works fine with Plogue Bidule. You set up the channel mappings with the Audio MIDI Setup program.
