Yes, I'm afraid that the most recent version of acrobat reader
installs itself as a "plug-in" to Netscape, without regard to
your preferences. ( Earlier versions made it an option.)
However, just "right click" on any pdf link in Netscape to open
up a box which will allow you to SAVE the pdf file, instead of
starting up the plug-in. Later, when your internet session is
closed, you can fire up Acrobat Reader and load the pdf.
Alternatively, use
http://www.adobe.com/prodindex/acrobat/simpleform.html
which will read whatever pdf URL you want, and display it in your
browser as HTML. There's no need to keep acrobat reader around...
and no wait for an email to be returned with an attachment.
BTW - as someone has already stated, PDFs are based on postscript;
text is readily discernible in the file ( surrounded by lots of
formatting junk ), but the encapsulated images are encoded.
IMO, there is no better way than PDF for governments and businesses
to provide forms, instructions, and other data. A PDF file printed
on your home printer is absolutely identical to the original printed
version, regardless of the platform used to retrieve it. No other
software/method can say that.
