Hi Patty,
What you need is an explanation of hardware.
Try:
"Build your own 486/486DX" by Aubrey Pilgrim from McGraw-Hill
This is an elementary approach to PC clone hardware and is
quite easy to understand and follow. I believe there was also
a preceding edition about 386 level, and I know there was a
succeeding one about the first Pentiums. There is nothing
advanced or in depth about this book, but it was an excellant
starting point for me.
For a graduate course try:
"The WINN L. ROSCH HARDWARE BIBLE" from SAMS Publishing
New editions keep coming out, but the neophyte can easily get
lost in all the detail.
You will have to have a basic understanding of BOTH the operating system
and the hardware to do your own hardware upgrades, but if an old
warehouseman like myself can build a box or three on a wish and a prayer
then anyone can.
End
Peace
