For the BEST email, you should think Linux.
And yes, Linux will run on that machine (as long as you put some
swap on your HDD). Of course, you won't be able to use X, but
you don't need it for email. Most distributions (with the notable
exception of RedHat) enable you to do a compact installation
(including email) that will run on your 386. You'll find that
console Linux runs MUCH faster than Windows 3.11.
