If your Father is keyboard oriented the LINUX solution (probably with
PINE) or PCPINE on DOS is very good. If he is mouse oriented, then the
ARACHNE solution is better.
I would suggest more RAM in either case, if possible, and definitely the
fastest modem you can install on his serial ports.
For Arachne, set it up to go directly to MAIL.HTM, and be aware that if
you reply to an Email address, that you can add that address to the
HOTLIST.HTM with the proper icon in the tool bar, and so use the Hotlist
for an address book, and you can install an external editor that allows
cut and paste between files or messages as well as having a right button
edit menu. You will need to get the add-on (APM) package from the
Arachne home site:

Also cleanup the autoexec.bat and config.sys to get rid of
any extra drivers and/or TSRs. AND DELTREE WINDOWS, IT WILL MAKE YOU
FEEL SO GOOD!
Make sure he has an analog phone line in his office to connect the modem
to. Many office buildings use an internal digital telephone system
which will not work and may (probably will) damage the modem.
I am assuming the 386 will be a stand alone Email box. If this is
connecting to a LAN, he should have the LAN administrator help him
with his setup which may determine what Email package he is forced
to use. The LAN administrator has both a right and a responsibility
to know what is connected to and running on the LAN.
There are lots of other choices for both DOS and the LINUX console, but
these two are as good as any. Since you already have DOS, I would give
the nod to Arachne. BTW if he tries to browse the WWW, with that
machine, he might be disappointed, but for Email, it should be superb
even at 4 MEGs RAM.
