If your father is interested in an e-mail program only, and doesn't
need any web-surfing capabilities, my personal favorite is Pegasus for
DOS. Runs fast and efficient on my 286. Latest version, v.3.40, is from
1996. It is very easy to use, once set up, and still has a *lot* of
features like:
- Multiple folders in two levels, I think - maybe even more
- Automatic filtering (sorting) of incoming messages
- Multiple adress-books with quick lookup
- Macros - design your own shortcuts
- MIME-capable - can send and receive messages in foreign languages with
strange characters and can send and receive all sorts of attachments
with the MIME standard, not to mention it handles the MIME Digest
format, which is very useful when reading this list (you only download
one big message daily and can browse the messages about the same way as
you would have done if you had received them individually)
- Distribution lists - for mass e-mail to a group of clients, e.g.
- Extensive built-in help, context-sensitive
- Pre-defined forms for quick message-composing of messages of a type
you send regularly, good for business/office use (haven't tried it
myself, yet)
- Easy to use interface, with pop-up windows and menus
- Completely keyboard-driven with many shortcuts - very fast!
- Multi-user-capable, all persons in a household can have their own
folders, addressbooks etc.
- Highly configurable
- Quick and easy printout of mail to a printer
Mainly designed for Novell Netware use, but can also be adapted for
Internet use. Then you will however need some helper programs:
- A dialler to connect to your ISP
- A ppp-program which handles the communication, once connected
- A POP3/SMTP-program which collects your mail, and send mail to your
ISP's mailbox
- A simple menu-program to switch easily between these different tasks,
optional

of the Netherlands.
I personally found it quite difficult to set up, but then again I
didn't follow those instructions to the point but rather wanted to
incorporate Pegasus in an existing setup (of Bobcat, BTW).
