Hello all,

I've been lurking for several months, absorbing all the sometimes
interesting, often arcane information being posted. My goal is to
delete Windows (3.11) from my hard disk and return to a pure DOS
environment (now using MS-DOS 6.22). I am a passable batch file and
GW-BASIC programmer. However, before I can realize my goal, several
problems must be solved, and sevral questions answered. Any help or
information would be greatly appreciated.

My system consists of: 486 DX2/66 with 20mb RAM, 1.2mb 5.25" floppy,
1.44mb 3.5" floppy, 24x CDROM drive, C: drive = 102mb, D: drive = 330mb,
33600 data/fax modem, Mustek color scanner with EPP interface, a Citizen
GSX-230 24-pin dot matrix printer (bought for $35 at a yard sale and
wouldn't part with it for $350!), and an HP Deskjet 720C color inkjet
printer (a beauty, but will NOT print from DOS!). Questions follow:

1) How can I operate my scanner from DOS?
2) Where can I find OCR software and image-editing software that will
work from DOS? I have two DOS-based OCR programs, but they both
require a "scanner card" to operate. (???)
3) I am using Arachne version 1.48 beta, and am fairly happy with it.
But I have been unable to get Net-Tamer, NetMail, or Bobcat to work
at all. Apparently I'm not as intelligent as I thought, because I
have followed all the instructions I can find, but no luck. Bobcat
connects me with my ISP, but won't go to PPP - just my ISP's BBS.
Netmail connects to my ISP, says username & password accepted, PPP
negotiations OK or something, then after several minutes ends with
the error message "no contact". Net-Tamer worked once (text only),
but screwed up my monitor for a week and never worked again. Why?
4) I would like some kind of DOS graphical interface - mostly to show
the unbelievers that DOS does indeed do graphics. I've heard about a
few programs that sound like they are GUI's, but haven't got enough
info to find/download/purchase one. Any hints?
5) Would like to find a source for parts/peripherals/info on an AT&T
6300 PC. It is an Intel 8086 16-bit cpu, 640k RAM, 32mb HD with a
green monochrome monitor. I know they were available new with color
monitors - I almost bought one about 1985/86. This computer is still
working. I need a keyboard (several broken keys), a color monitor, a
modem that will work with it... and somebody to tell me the secret to
opening the case! Seriously, I have tried again and again and cannot
get the case off this machine, so I don't even know what kind of slots
it may have, whether it has a second serial port, etc. Help!

That's enough questions for my first trip. Any answers out there?

Thanks in advance, and best regards to all,

Arnie Stewart
