My guess is that your problem isn't DOS incompatibility
per se so much as the lack of a DOS driver for the
darned thing. HP make great equipment but decided
(immediately after I bought my 540c) that they would
commit themselves to Windoze, damn their eyes.
However, if you try their fax-on-demand service, you
should be able to get the document which spells out
all the PCL codes for you which you can put into a
.BAT file (or several) to set up the printer to work.
An alternative is the HP Customer BBS (if it's still
running--I failed to reach it last time I tried)
which contains (contained) a bunch of drivers for
various models.
Also note that in DOS, it's not uncommon for the
printer driver to be part of the application--for
example, most wordprocessors ask you to choose a
printer definition when you install them, and that
will work only from within that program. The 540
was not one of the printers listed in WordPerfect 5.0
but it included a "make printer definition" program
which enabled me to use another HP model as a basis
and insert the relevant escape codes for the features
I use--a long process, rather nerve-wracking for a
non-techie like myself, but it works pretty well.
Anyway, I do have the DOS driver for the 540 but I
think the 720C uses PCL 5, in which case it wouldn't
be much help unless you are able to get into its
innards and revise the command codes.
