Hi Glenn,
Long time no type! :)
}- No prob!!!
}- The "full version" of DR-DOS comes with all of what everyone
}- knows as "Novell Netware". IIRC, you just might be using part
}- of it right now. (do you still use that stuff from DRWeb-spy)?
I don't know if you're on the SurvPC list or not...but I have
seen several discussions in that list on whether or not DR-DOS is
*really* freeware. Some of the discussion was that the license
really only grants the right to "evaluate the software for a
reasonable amount of time" or some such. I went back and read
the license agreement that came with my copy of DR-DOS, and it
does indeed say that, but it also says something about it being
free to any individual for non-commercial use - at least that's
how I understood it. Wouldn't it be nice if the software people
in general could write a license agreement in plain english that
an ordinary person can understand? :)
Anyway, correct me if I'm wrong, but Novell is a client-server
network. I already have my husbands old Novell 3.11 and have
studied the manuals and docs quite a bit. That's partly how I
was able to understand how to make the DRWeb-spyder stuff work.
[And I haven't been using it much lately, but I've saved all the
files I used and the how-to's and stuff ;) on a zip disk.]
Networking is not my strong point - yet ;) - that's why I want to
get some apps and do some hands-on learning. Soon we will have 4
computers, an extra hub, and an extra laptop that I can use to
experiment with and learn on - that's a long story, anyway...
I have been doing some reading on the web and I was thinking of
peer-to-peer networking software... Correct me if I'm wrong, but
isn't it true that with peer-to-peer you don't need a file
server, or network cards, or a hub - and that you can even
network machines over serial cables/ports and parallel
cables/ports - even with modems (!) - and all that's needed to
network this way is software and drivers? This is what I want to
try to do, perhaps using Arachne as the main "intranet"
interface/menuing system/browser.
As always, thanks a lot Glenn for all your help :)
Boanne
