I'll try and put it all together (if you understand this crazy thing
bellow, the years are decades (1960 mean 1960-1969))
1960 1970 1980 1990 2000
Unix-> Linux
CP/M->QDOS->MS-DOS->Novell DOS multitasking project
->OS/2 project->OS/2 1.0
->Win 1 -> Win 95
->Win NT 1 -> Win 2000
>From Unix (that was spelled Un*x in the 80's) came a clone CP/M, some guy
in Seatle made a clone of this for the IBM (QDOS). Billy bought/stole this
(who knows, and what's the diffrence ;).
IBM and M$ worked together to get a 32 bit multitasking OS (OS/2) There was
some kind of conflict (I never did find out much about this). And Win 1.0
and OS/2 1.0 was released. M$ worked on with the 32-bit part in NT but
didn't get it working good until NT 4 (NT 3.51 was Win 3.x with Win32s).
Novell planned but canceled a multitasking DOS. (was parts of this later
used by Caldera?)
In 1991 (no I don't know, don't strike me down!) Linus Thorvalds made an OS
as we all (nowdays) know as Linux.
In 1901 Win NT 5 / Win 2000 will be out (I assume they mean 2001 and that's
normal for M$ to be a year late, remember Chigaco?).
We could add other things, like how Digital Research got sold to Novell and
Novell DOS bought up by Caldera. How IBM continued to release new DOS
versions, freedos starting up etc. But that will make it hard.
BTW: Can someone tell me how Quatro Pro and WP was moved around from
diffrent owners? My dad and I discussed that the other day but we weren't
100% sure.
