Hi Guys,
I need a setup disk for an IBM Personal Computer AT. Have searched
the web to find a download site, but to no avail. This machine does
not have an on-board ROM for specifying the setup options and the
hard drive type. A proprietary setup disk is required. Anyone having
such a setup disk or anyone knowing of a download site please let me
know. I believe that this AT is a model 5170.
Some little kids, all belonging to a very large family, found this machine
at the county dump. It was complete with a gray-scale VGA monitor and a
keyboard. It has an MFM hard drive and two 5 1/4" floppy drives. They
asked for my help. We plugged it in, and lo and behold, it actually
worked! They are now happily learning DOS and running some cool programs
that I provided for them on the two floppy disk drives.
When we plugged the machine in and turned it on, the hard drive started
whirring and spinning, and all the idiot lights flashed on in the
proper sequence, and it counted up all its memory, 640K + 1 meg extended.
However, we got an error messages saying
"System options not specified - Run setup", "Press F-1 to resume".
We inserted a boot disk in the A drive, pressed F-1, and it booted!
The system does not recognize the hard drive because we cannot as of yet
specify that it is installed and that it is of such and such a type, etc.
I promised these kids that I would do every thing I could to set up their
hard drive. I know how to do this, but I will need a setup disk. Please
help!
