In this partly related letter, I would like to mention my
thoughts on the current intresting in computers.

Seems like since the internet became more popular in the scene,
the general population intrest in Computers have raised. Either from
the increasing "encounters" of sites and computers with crackers,
or the general fact that the computer is catching a good position
as a communication device, Computers are currently a hot topic.

Thing is, I got a strange feeling that might be just a phase.

Whatever is the reason, right now the main intrest is computers and
technology in general. We know it. The "really big corps" know it.
Look at the advs we get latly in the tech areas. They all want
to show that they got the product we all thought of having in the
new millenia. Unfortunatly, as it always goes with big corps and
advs in general, the major intrest is primarly on selling the
idea of "living in a new age" and mainly, the product itself.
So the remaining question is, how much is left to get the product
to be actually usable.

A recent social habbit that I noticed
is that people now rate people according to the programs that
they are using, in addition to their cloths of choice, cars,
shoes, and external looks. "He is using Linux, so he gotta be one
of those hackers or geeks". "He is using DOS, meaning he cant
afford a new computer or cant accept new concepts." "He is using
a Macintosh, meaning he is either dealing with graphics or just
a person who cant learn hard stuff and therefor need simple computers."

Softwares, OSs, and computers in general are now being measured
with "brands". Everybody got Microsoft OSs and prorgams. Everybody
got an Intel computer. Get an alternative computer/OS, and you'll be
in deep trouble.

But now, the "computer fashion" is switching from Wintel, to the
alternative options. People still regard "DOS" as being old and
unuseable, and not owning an Intel PC/compatible is still concidered
weird, but several alternatives such as Linux and BeOS are begining
to be accepted, and even get in fashion. I think that its possible
to compare it to the now-popular street-ware trend in cloths, as
far as I've seen how the US looks like. (from TV and general IRC chats.)
But even here "brand names" are still controling.

I'd like to confess, that I never cared for brand names. I buy a cloth
because the way it looks like, and the way it feels.
I dont take it because it got a name of a certain company on it or
because "everybody are wearing it". I guess that this is one of the
reasons why i'm "still using DOS" and prefer alternative options.
I take and use what I like, and not because I was told to take it.

What I feel, is that this entire "alternative options" trend is
just one of those phases that come and go, and unless people like
us (those who think and use what they like, and not because everybody
use the same) exploit this window of oppertunity, well, I dont
really think that this entire thing will hold. I'm sure that this
"window" will do enough damage to the previous "status standard",
and that companies such as MS will suffer from it, but MS is
not the first and is not going to be the last that behave
like they do. (although MS is a good example for a company that managed
to get big.).

[speech mode off].
Eh. Hope I didnt got you people to fall a sleep over there. ;)
