Hello Everyone,
If this is too far off-topic please let me know and I will cease
and desist :) However these issues are important enough to me
that if there are other interested people here, perhaps we can
form another list to discuss these issues. I also want to
discuss these issues with reasonable people, and our group here
seems to be especially reasonable.
Part of the inspiration for this is the recent discussion here
about laws requiring webpages be accessible to all browsers to
help facilitate access for those with disabilities.
The rest of the inspiration comes from recent news that Australia
was/is attempting to make a national (?) law forbidding access to
pornography for children. There is also a law being
proposed/legislated in Michigan making it illegal for ISP's to
allow sexually explicit material to be accessed by children.
This law is being fought by the ACLU.
Let me say from the very beginning that I am against censorship
of any kind, but let me also say as a parent that I recognize
that everything that is appropriate for adults is not appropriate
for children. I've seen some pretty rough stuff out there on the
Wild, Wild Web.
Let me also say that I believe everything that can be possibly be
done to make access (and life in general) easier for people with
disabilities should be done.
Philosophically, I also agree that we shouldn't need laws
concerning such things, but I'm in touch with reality enough to
know that people don't always do what they should.
But none of this is really the point. I believe a certain amount
regulation is coming in the previously mentioned areas and in
other areas as well. What I would like to discuss is the
technical aspects of such things. Also I would like to discuss
how we as a community can participate in the formation of
regulations so that everyone can be reasonably happy with
whatever results.
