12 bits are the standard for a GIF image IIRC (we have already gone over
this once - and no one on the liust believed me then).
2^12 = 4096 colours

Or, do you mean that a newer program (for Windows) can have more? Could you
tell us of one such program, and a URL to such an image (or send me such a
gif off-list?)
