Leave the battery in. It gets charged when the power supply is
plugged in. The led changes colour when the battery is fully charged
(Red -> green, I believe). Use the computer with the power supply
plugged in if an outlet is available. The computer uses the battery
power if there is no outlet available. I think it lasts for several
hours depending on if you have a hard drive.

Did you get Toshiba Dos with it? There is a program in there that
setsup a small ramdisk on startup. Toshiba site has a sartup/diags
file for it.
