While I won't recommend what to do with the board (others have already done
so :) ) I can tell you that the blown chip was either the Northbridge or
Southbridge component of the board's VX chipset. Examining the traces on
the board would tell you which, but looking up the other chip's markings
would be a more reliable way of finding out.
Intel chipsets are made up of two halfs - each 'bridges' a bus to another.
The Northbridge bridges the Pentium to the memory, PCI, AGP and other
motherboard control circuitry, while the Southbridge bridges PCI to ISA,
IDE, APM, USB and RTC.
I think you would have to remove the chip from another VX board or buy a
replacement - I think only Intel will sell you that, and probably only in
pairs. Also, Intel's pricing for processors is in dollars per 100 units,
not sure if this applies to other chips. They might not even make the VX
any more...
