Hi All.
My friend was given a 486 motherboard, together with 2 CPUs and 4
SIMMs. Unfortunately his current computer is an IBM 386SX, and
doesn't accept standard motherboards. So we've tried the 286 case I
had lying around.
We managed to get the motherboard in the case (fairly nicely; most of
the holes even matched up :) And hook up the power cables to it. The
motherboard is very good looking and jumperable to different CPUs,
with a VLB bus and 256k cache RAM.
Anyway, we didn't have any other cards, so we put the video card from
the 286 in (ISA VGA one), and all the SIMMs.
Turning the power on resulted in a blank screen. So we double checked
all the connections (eg power, video lead etc) The only card that was
in there was the video card, so I tried it with a serial card and IDE
card with floppy drive (also from the 286). All this produced nothing
on the screen. (except the flicker indicating power is coming down
the video cable [the monitor takes a separate power point]). [I did
test between each change]
So I tried more things, like different SIMMs, all the different
combinations and perumations I felt was enough. Tried the other CPU.
I even fooled with the jumpers [there was a nice table printed, so I
tried likely-looking values from that]. Setting the CPU voltage to 5
volts [vs 3.3V] made the chip fairly warm so I knew there was some
power getting to it.
My friend had talked to the person who gave him the board, and he
said the motherboard was working perfectly a few days before; he was
just getting rid of it because the lowest computer he now has is a
PII. He also said that one SIMM might be damaged.
I checked the voltage coming from the power supply. They were all a
little low, being 4.9V, -4.9V, 11.8V, -11.7V, 4.8V, etc. I don't know
the needed order of these voltages, but they seem sensible. The black
wires were in the middle, as they were in the 286 board. (Tested with
a high quality Fluke multimeter)
So, does anyone have any ideas at all? He is an arts student, but
wants to learn more about computers. :)
PS: As I think of it, we hooked up the speaker, and there was no beeps
or anything. The Turbo button and LED seemed to work.
Thanks in Advance for any help or suggestions.
(The next problem is getting something more than the 40MB harddrive ;)
