Blue?? How the IBM can be upgraded will depend on the specific model. A
company called Reply Corporation made replacement motherboards for some of
them. IBM made upgraded processors for some. Some PS/2s will accept
standard upgrade chips, or plain faster chips. Some PS/2s will accept the
motherboard from a newer or higher end PS/2.
For instance I bought an 8557sx (386sx20) that had been upgraded with an IBM
486slc3 wich ran at 3 times the 20mhz bus speed. However, I discovered that
the MB from a 9577 would fit my 8557 case. This gave me several advantages,
a 32-bit MCA bus (instead of 16-bit), more memory capacity, XGA-2 video, and
a true Intel 486dx-2/66. This motherboard, or Planar as IBM calls them,
will accept even faster chips.

The paper probably won't help. If you shorted the MB, it is probably one of
the screws or standoffs. Removing the MB from the case completely is the
best way to avoid this, at least for a test :-)

Yeah, Australia is a little far :-)
