Greetings from the GreatWhiteNorth:
northern Alberta that is. And not white yet, although it is getting frosty
in the mornings here - which is playing havoc with my corn eating . Yep,
the corn came in 3 wks late this year, but I love to run out and grab a few
ears - about 2 minutes before supper. That way I can eat really fresh corn
with GardenRipe tomatoes! SuperWow.
That is my sortaintro for now- except to tell you I am X-plat, and want to
get even crosser (try other OSs).
I thought I would lurk awhile. This thread sounds sooo interesting, I could
barely control myself. Then I gave up trying.
We got some computers into the small communities, but we put them with
gifted-kids' families, we did it through a loose community group, (so as to
be an example of empowerment, and provided a 'package' of software,
programmingtools, etc.
Our group is "Mamawe Payowin" Cree for "Get Together" - or meeting. We put
the name all over the computer with ear tag pen (eats into the paint). Thus
everybody else "Knew" to leave the machines alone. We also provided a
mini-kit for the kids to decorate the computers themselves. Most of the
originals have now upgraded - purchased new machines! Great ! except I
still have lots of tech support to do.
My GoldenOldie is a IDM 8088 with 2 floppy drives and 2 hard drives! I have
a wide format DM printer to go with it.
>From what I was tole theses machines would have cost $6,000 or more 'back
then'. My goal is to be able to get my email on this machine. BTW I put
DOS 5 and WP5.1 on this machine - all by myself. It came with a blank hard
drive, and I knew nothing about DOS. (still don't !)
The points raised in Yolanda's post were very good, and things I had not
thought of. I hope I am excused for jumping in like this on day 3 whithout
lurking for awhile. So let me take this opportunity to thank everyone
ahead of time. Just beware, since I live on the western shore of
LesserSlave Lake (on a mini-cow and sheep ranch) I just might send
something REALLY COOL your way very soon!
PS if any one else wants more details on how we did our "Working Computer
Museum" project, please ask. People who are poor/??/whatever do not like
to/find it very difficult to accept 'charity, cast off rubish, others'
leftovers, etc. There always has to be some love and empowerment with it.
