Where I live there are lots of resources for no-cost access
to the Internet - an excellent local Community Net, with
terminals in many public libraries. Problem is, only those
who enter libraries know about it, and the computer
illiterate among them don't touch the terminals anyhow.

For a while there was also 'lil old me, doing what I could
to get old machines into the hands of people who might be
interested in the idea, and teaching them how to use them.
I found that the people I was trying to reach simply
weren't interested in the idea, and those who *were*
receptive to the notion of bringing a computer into their
house only wanted the latest greatest machines, same as
everyone else.

At this point I think that the route that might lead to
success is setting up a local resource, perhaps a
storefront, with other community resources such as child
care available, and machines set up ready for use by
whoever might drop in. I have no ideas for financing
something like that :). Perhaps you could post information
inside about the availability and cost of such machines
should any users be interested in more than public access.
