First of all, I thank to all who tried to help me with my dead HD. I read
your advices carefully and tried out most of them.
I cleaned the contacts of the drive and applied contact spray on them. Then
took off the board. I rotated the drive and stopped suddenly. Unfortunately,
all of this has not brought a noticeable effect so far.

I looked up www. datarecoverygroup.com, also, but I couldn't find anything
about rate structure or an office in Germany or elswhere in Europe.
Then I phoned Ontrack's office in Boeblingen/Germany: their basic fee for
the first analysis is somewhat less than that of the other firm, but they
charge the same for the recovery. I'm afraid these prices might be the same
all over the world.

It's quite unlikely to find an identical drive nowadays: this drive is a
Western Digital 2700 (700MB) from 1994, that means it's old and small.
However, I have a similar drive WD 340 MB. The board is similar (but of
course not identical), it uses same voltage but lower ampere. What do you
think, can I try to swap boards without worsening the situation?

I have a slight hope: suddenly I remembered a short article in my local
newspapaer about a newly opended computer service in the neighbourhood.
This article had a picture with technical equipment (a.o. oscilloscope) in
the background. Now I have to find either that issue of the paper or the
shop itself.

In the meantime I try to survive with a Seagate ST-157A 40MB, at least 12
years old and still working.

I'd be really interested to know, how to make a "clean room" in home
environment. Years ago I had an idea, using similar technique like at
carlacquering in the bathroom. However, more knowledgeable people told me it
was bullshit ;-(
