Just for kicks, try sticking it in anyway, hook up only the mouse. see
what happens when you boot. I had a computer at work that had a bad I/O
card, so we swapped it, trying out many in the process. The one we found
worked, except for the serial port which was NFG. Rather than hunt for
another, we slipped in a second one and that was it, solved the problem of
needing another serial port. granted, the second didn't have drive
controllers on it, that may have had effect. You can try various jumper
settings, resetting as you go, till you get what you want. Just record the
initial settings so you can go back to start.
Alternatively, you might acquire a bus mouse and bus mouse card. I've not
yet seen one work on any of the legacy systems coming through at work though.
(I'm "working" volunteer afternoons at "Computers for schools". They
recondition salvaged systems and give them to schools.)
