In response to Or Botton, Yolanda, etc., on this subject:
"Multi-tasking" minds are certainly a natural asset that has many practical
applications. You will most frequently find such folks to have what is
called "ADD" (or its more "hyper" variant, "ADHD"), which is often
misunderstood for laziness. These sorts of people often *need* distractions
to help them focus -- "distractions" that other people would find hindersome
to their tasks at hand. And these ADD folks often accomplish great feats in
very short periods of time; they work better under pressure, and this
ability has been coined as "hyperfocus". I have manifestations of this in
my own work habits, and the author of Net-Tamer has ADD.
My curiosity with multi-tasking and computers concerns why we choose what we
choose to satisfy our need for stimulation, or the need for focusing, or
whatever else.
Now I believe a lot of the desire for multi-tasking is either as an outlet
for ADD types (in the case of computers), or just personality preferences.
