KL> opinions?
Here is my ill-informed and vague but possibly useful opinion. Your
mileage may vary, kids, don't try this at home, objects may be larger
than they appear in mirror.
I have set up Nettamer to work on my lil XT notebook here. I also use
some DOS PPP-based software on my BBS machine. I note that Nettamer
uses PAP unless you tell it otherwise. The short version is PAP
(Password Authentication Protocol? I forget) is a much "simpler" and
more standard way to connect to your ISP; also, from what I understand,
it's more secure. The "script" for connecting via PAP is very simple
and very much standardized from provider to provider.
A conventional PPP connection, at least with my ISP, is another story.
My script connects to a "front door service" that gives me a menu I use
to connect to my ISP, then I enter my username and password, and then I
get another menu, select "p" to get a PPP connection, and -then- tell
PPPD.EXE to try to connect with my ISP's PPP connection. Anyhow...
I've had to change how I accomplished that last three or four times over
the years, because my ISP's menu system changed. I had to go through
and manually change the login script.
The best way I know how to do that, is to log on using a regular
terminal program, write down each prompt I get, and the appropriate
response. Then I go back through my script and correct it so it looks
for the right prompts and provides the correct responses in the correct
order. (It's an art.) Then I try it and see if it works, and if it
doesn't, it's usually a matter of adjusting the timing so the script
doesn't "give up" before it gets the correct prompt.
PAP, for as long as I've had such a thing on my ISP, hasn't changed. I
-think- it's standardized enough, that they -can't- change it. And as I
said, that's what Nettamer uses (usually), and that's (probably) why
Nettamer didn't stop working while the other did.
Hope this helps, but if it doesn't, well, Happy Holidays. <grin>
